Shengmu dian (1023-1031), section

Source: Liu (1984, fig. 115-4, p. 198)

The front porch space (fujie) of the Shengmu dian (main hall) extends into the central structure. In order to keep this porch space open, the columns that normally support the upper eaves are moved back two rafters. The weight of the upper eaves is carried on beams spanning this enlarged space from the columns supporting the lower eaves to the relocated columns. Compare to the back porch, where the columns remain in their normal positions.
