Purlin

The Yingzao fashi distinguishes two types of purlin according to the section: the rectangular fang and the circular tuan. Our sample building uses two types of fang and two types of tuan:
  1. the columnar purlin (zhutou fang), which lies on the centre line of the outsid columns.
  2. the eaves purlin (liaoyan fang ), which lies outside the column line. A tuan can also be used here, in which case it is called a liaofeng tuan. The distance between the front and back eaves purlins is one of the factors needed for juzhe.
  3. the ridge purlin (ji tuan ), which forms the ridge of the roof.
  4. the ordinary purlin (ping tuan), which is any purlin that does not have another more specific name. (None of the above, in other words.)

See the front hall (Xian dian) of Shengmu miao for examples.
