Shengqi
(literally, 'rise and fall') specifies that columns are not equally tall:
they are taller at the corners of the building and shorter in the middle.
This is one of the sources of curvature in the structural frame (cejiao
and juzhe are the others) and thus contributes
to the curve of the roof. It will be easier to construct a model if you
assume that the columns are all equally tall, but you will not achieve
the intended optical effect. (See the illustration in Liang 1984, 260.)
The difference in height between the columns at the corners and those in the central bay is 5 fen for a three-bay building, and an additional 5 fen for every two bays thereafter. |
